'Trolling' on tumblr
Many times, people justify their bigotry online under the guise of 'trolling': meaning, they know that what they're saying is problematic, yet they continue to say it in an attempt to elicit a reaction. It's often 'supposed' to be to point out problematic trends within society, but instead allows for the trolling individual to propagate and excuse their ignorance.

"Harsh and belligerent undertones"
Here, an anonymous message on the blogging website tumblr blames Islamophobia on the 'harsh and belligerent undertones' of the Arabic language spoken in places like Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan... interestingly enough, none of which have Arabic as their official language. It's an example of manifest Orientalism––the creation of a homogenous view of muslims as an all-encompassing image.
"It sure isn't a best seller."
Facebook comment: "I've never in my life seen a Quran, must not be that famous of a book... justy [sic] saying...it sure isn't a best seller."
Marvel Comics addresses Islamophobia
Pixie: "So why do you wear that burqa? You're so pretty! Everyone's seen you without it now, and it's got to be really, really hot."
Nehzno (off-panel): "It is not a burqa. It is an abaya with a niqab veil. Show respect for Sooraya by learning about her."
–New X-Men #42
Marvel Comics addresses casual islamophobia between characters Megan ('Pixie', top left) and Sooraya ('Dust' top-right) through Nehzno (left), who calls out Megan on her ignorance of Sooraya's religion and culture. While Marvel still has some issues with problematic representation (for example, the assumption that arabic is the universal language of the 'Middle East'), it's a move towards addressing the problematic portrayal of muslim characters.
